EU RESOLUTION ON HEALTH: MGR. MERISI (COMECE), THE REFERENCE TO ABORTION IS "NEGATIVE"

” “"There are some positive aspects as well as very negative ones, namely the fact that abortion is presented as a right." This is how Mgr. Giuseppe Merisi, Bishop of Lodi and representative of the Italian Bishops Conference to the COMECE (Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community), described the European Parliament resolution on the fifth Millennium Development Objective about the improvement of mother-child health voted today. This resolution focuses on the “rights” related to sexual and reproductive health, expressly supports the use of abortion and "blames the Churches for being against contraception as the use of condoms is essential to prevent diseases and unwanted pregnancies." "Unfortunately, when it comes to discussing sensitive subjects like the defence of life, family and so on," said the bishop interviewed by the SIR "there is a common view, even inside the European Parliament, asserting the primacy of the right to individual liberty over the great values of life and human dignity. Thus, the bishop calls for "a deeper commitment to raise the awareness of people and institutions on these crucial issues".
