HAITI: UNICEF AND WFP TOGETHER FOR THE VICTIMS OF HURRICANE GUSTAV

” “Unicef and the World Food Programme (Wfp) have joined forces to bring aids to the thousands of people who are now in temporary shelters in Haiti, after the devastating hurricane Gustav hit the country, destroying means of subsistence, houses, cattle and crops. In the heavily-populated districts of the capital, Port-au-Prince – such as Carrefour, Cité-Soleil and Tabarre –, hundreds of people who were already living in extreme poverty had to leave their homes. "It is essential to immediately give life-saving assistance to make sure women and children, who are the most exposed to diseases transmitted by contaminated water, have drinkable water and access to basic hygiene and sanitation", stated Annamaria Laurini, representative of Unicef in Haiti. In the meantime, the Wfp carried, by road and on a UN helicopter, over 50 tons of food and hygienic kits, blankets and tents provided by Unicef. Tents will be set up in the affected villages to give shelter to the evacuated families who cannot have access to the existing shelters.
