EU PARLIAMENT: MAKE COMMERCIALS RESPECT HUMAN DIGNITY. NO TO CLICHES ABOUT WOMEN

” ” ” “Protecting the women’s image by removing the clichés that are mostly created by commercials. The recommendation comes from the European Parliament that, gathered in Brussels, has approved by a large majority the report of the Swedish MEP Eva-Britt Svensson. The report, which also contains some ambiguous references to sex "genders", insists first and foremost on substantial gender equality and same opportunities for men and women. Then it points out that discriminations are still widespread in the media: that’s why the member states "should take suitable measures to make marketing and commercials respect the human dignity and the integrity of the human being", "not involve any direct or indirect discrimination and contain no instigation to hatred based on gender, race or ethnical origin, religion or personal belief, disability, age or sexual orientation" and "contain nothing that approves of, extol or induce to abusing women". Advertising agencies are invited not to use "anorexic" models. Messages containing clichés against women must be removed, especially from TV programmes, textbooks, toys and the Internet.
