Unicef expresses "deep concern for the serious consequences of the recent conflict in South Ossetia "on women and children". "Evacuated children and women have seen their lives upset and now live in fear and insecurity", stated Maria Calivis, director of the Regional Office for Central Eastern Europe and the Community of Independent States of Unicef, back from her mission in Tbilisi, Moscow and Vladikavkaz: "Many live in extremely hard conditions and need specific assistance and support to be able to go back to a normal life". Unicef points out it is important for children to go back to school as soon as possible, as soon as conditions so allow: "The prospect of going back to school gives children a feeling a normality and hope in the future", explains Calivis. Taking children back to school, offering them psycho-social support, teaching them about the dangers of the mines, providing medical and nutritional assistance, water, hygiene and sanitation are Unicef’s main plans for Georgia.
