Refugee crisis
(Brussels) – The EU Commission sees the glass half full, but the figures are not comforting. Today, the EU Executive adopted the latest report on the progress made in the emergency rehoming and resettlement mechanisms by looking at the figures of the last month. “The positive trend observed in the previous report is confirmed due to the member states’ increased efforts in rehoming and resettlements”, a notice states. “The rehoming process has gone on, with another 776 people rehomed after June 14th. Currently, the total number of rehomed people in Greece and Italy is 3,056. Other major results have been achieved in resettlements, with 8,268 people resettled so far, out of the 22,504 agreed upon as part of the July 2015 programme, and a total of 802 Syrian refugees resettled in Turkey as part of the EU-Turkey Agreement”. These are in fact fairly low figures if compared with the huge migratory flows going to Mediterranean Europe. The EU Commission actually points out: “Still few people are arriving in Greece, after the enforcement of the EU-Turkey Agreement”, while “seasonal arrivals have started in Italy”, so Brussels “calls the member states to go on with and increase their efforts”, “as reiterated by the European Council on June 28th”.
