EU: preparations under way for the summit in Bratislava; the 27 leaders discuss the future of the EU after Brexit

(Strasbourg) Europe’s political week opens up in Strasbourg with the plenary session of the European Parliament. As usual, though, the official headquarters of the EU Parliament will be hosting the EU Commission and the leaders of the EU Council too (the EU Council is currently chaired by Slovakia). Then, the European week will include an informal meeting with the heads of state and government of the 27 member states in Bratislava on 16th September. The British Prime Minister Theresa May will not be there: actually, the meeting will engage in political reflections “to boost further reforms and the development of the European Union with 27 member states”, looking therefore at the post-Brexit period. On 29th June, the 27 leaders had an informal meeting to discuss the political and practical implications of Brexit. On that occasion, the leaders “opened a debate on the future of the European Union”, the EU Council’s website states. “We are determined to stay together and work within the EU to face the challenges of the twenty-first century and find solutions in the interests of our countries and our peoples”. The leaders are expected to arrive in the Slovakian capital early in the morning, on Thursday, 16th September; the first session of discussions will take place from 10.00 am to 12.30 pm. After a group photo, a business lunch will be held from 01.00 pm to 04.00 pm, during which political discussions will go on. After another session, the meeting is expected to end at about 07.00 pm.
