Colombia: the bishops after the no to the plebiscite, overcome polarisation and division

After the result of the plebiscite that defeated the peace agreement in Colombia, the Bishops Conference (Cec) issued a release in which political leaders and the Columbian populations are called to overcome polarisation and division. The release, written by the president of Cec, mgr. Luis Augusto Castro Quiroga, was presented by the general secretary, mgr. Elkin Fernando Álvarez Botero, yesterday afternoon.

“We call everyone – it reads – to an objective analysis of reality, to a respectful and fraternal dialogue, to unity and generosity. We promote a culture of acceptance, that prepares the soul to forgiveness and reconciliation”. In addition, the bishops point out and appreciate the government’s intention to convene a national peace agreement. And they confirm the will of the Catholic Church, as a result of its pastoral mission, to take part in development plans and initiatives that help eradicate the roots of violence. Finally, they ask the government, the political leaders and Farc to push the interests of their own groups into the background, to peacefully accept the result of the plebiscite, and to retain their will to talk”.
