US election: Schulz, “Trump, a standard-bearer for people’s fears”. Weber, “leave no room to radical people”

(Brussels) “US voters have expressed themselves. Donald Trump’s victory is undeniable and must be respected. I congratulate him and the Republican Party for such victory”. Martin Schulz, president of the European Parliament, sends his message too to the new president of the United States, Donald Trump. He immediately adds: “Trump managed to become the standard-bearer for the anxieties and fears of millions of Americans. Now, such concerns must be addressed with reliable politics and ideas”. He adds that this election campaign will not be remembered in American history, so interspersed with “vitriol and polarisation” as it was. Now, it’s up to president Trump “to face the awesome task of reuniting a divided nation”. Schulz also points out that “most of the matters that concern the external perspective on Trump’s future presidency are still unanswered: from Syria to Iraq, from Ukraine to Libya”, Trump is expected to give answers, and Schulz calls him “to use a right mixture of responsibility, moderation and leadership”. Manfred Weber, head of the European People’s Party at the EU Assembly, is cautious too: “The message is clear, now it’s Europe turn. We must believe in ourselves and be more responsible. We do not know what we can expect of the USA”. “For Europe’s political culture, this is one further alert. We must take people’s concerns and fears seriously into account and give effective, realistic answers. We must leave no room to radical people across the world”.
