Jubilee
“The rich wage war on each other to own more” whilst the poor “tend to be peacemakers, peace-builders, to believe in peace”. This is the Pope’s conviction who, during his speech delivered off-the-cuff in Spanish to mark the Jubilee of the homeless, cited the words of a witness he had just listened to: “war is the greatest poverty, poverty that destroys”. “For us, Christians, peace has begun in a stable, in a manger, in a marginalised family”, Pope Francis recalled. “This is the peace that God desires for all of his sons and daughters”. “In your situation, you can be peacemakers”, the Pope told the over 5,000 people present. “Give an example of peace, we need peace in the world, in the Church. All Churches need peace, and all religions need to grow in peace, because they are heralds of peace. Each of you, in your religion, can make your own contribution, seeking that harmony which will give you dignity”.
