EU: Strasbourg Parliament, a discussion on the “future of Europe”. 300 intellectuals call to the March for Europe

(Strasbourg) The plenary session of the European Parliament, that began in Strasbourg yesterday afternoon, is coming into its own this morning with a “joint discussion on the future of the EU”. The debate was opened by Guy Verhofstadt with a report on the “potential evolution and adjustment of the current institutional organisation of the European Union”, followed by the speeches of Mercedes Bresso and Elmar Brok about “improving the operation of the EU by making the most of the potentials of the Lisbon Treaty”. Right on the day that celebrates that 14^th February 1984 when the European Parliament passed the Project for a Treaty establishing the EU (Spinelli Project), the intention is to “take a new initiative to revive the EU on a stronger democratic basis”. This has been asked for by a number of international pro-European associations that promoted the “March for Europe”, due to take place in Rome on 25^th March, when the Italian capital will celebrate the 60^th anniversary of the Rome Treaties that gave birth to the first European institutions. The March, which all citizens are called to take part in, aims to be a way to provide “political leaders with the strength and courage to bring the European Union to a new beginning”, as written in an appeal signed by over three hundred European intellectuals asking for “a new foundation for the EU”, which means strengthening the “EU’s institutions and policies, especially its foreign and security policy and its economic and social policy”.
