“Man has to take responsibility for the earth" and Christians "are called to spur creative public talks on the subject", in the awareness that "it is one of the big projects of the future”. This is the content of the leading article on the latest issue of “Europe infos”, a monthly journal published by Comece (Commission of episcopates of the European community) and SirEuropa about the relation between Catholics and energy policies. “Safe energy and climate change will be in the forefront” of Europe in the next few years, comments Noël Treanor, secretary general of Comece; hence the need for "a common energy policy" whose "negotiation would be a precautionary measure given the vulnerability of energy resources”. “To secure energy supplies – the leading article reads on – the collective power of the member states in the negotiation with third parties would be far more effective than an unilateral or bilateral process. The sharing of energy resources would make for a prudent and coordinate management of the remaining resources”. “A delicate point” which, says Treanor, “the European politicians should begin to worry about". "According to the Christian theology of creation – he observes – man has to take responsibility for the earth “. Hence, he concludes, the Christians’ task: in the awareness that "it is one of the big projects of the future, they are called to spur creative public talks about the subject so that politicians can play a leading role in this domain”.
