"There are still legal, administrative and linguistic barriers to professional mobility, plus a poor knowledge of the available information and help": Vladimír Špidla, European Commissioner for employment, social affairs and equal opportunities, is dealing with the goals and plans drawn up for 2006, which has been proclaimed by the EU Commission as the "European Year of Professional Mobility". "Many workers are scarcely attracted by the benefits of working abroad or changing job. These are the points we should worry about". The goal of the special year, which for the first time combines two strong issues of European integration, territorial mobility and employment, "is to raise the workers’ awareness of the benefits of working abroad or changing job. Working abroad or in a new professional area offers the chance of gaining new skills and new experience". According to the Commission, "re-qualification is essential, also in the light of today’s global economy". The first official initiative of the year – a presentation conference – will take place in Brussels on February 23rd and 24th 2006, followed by several events in the 25 EU member states and in those that are in line for accession. In the meantime, the Commission has opened the European portal of professional mobility (http://europa.eu.int/eures), "to provide information on job offers and studying in Europe". In addition, the website of the year has been developed: http://europa.eu.int/comm/employment_social/workersmobility2006.
