About half a million people hit by the tsunami have been aided by the international Caritas network during the first stage of the emergency, with 450 million dollars’ worth of aids. “Despite all the problems, Caritas’ response to the tsunami saved many lives, gave hope and helped prevent violence and epidemics". This is the conclusion of the President of Caritas internationalis (CI), Denis Viénot, as he spoke today in Rome at a press conference to launch a leaflet called ‘Rebuilding Communities, Restoring Lives and Renewing Hope after the Tsunami’, available in English, French and Spanish. The leaflet publishes the figures and projects that have been kick-started by the Caritas network in the countries hit by the submarine earthquake. "It was a success added Viénot -, but there’s still lots of work to be done to provide the victims with adequate accommodation, safe means of subsistence and peace so that everyone can rise their families without any fear”. In the twelve months following the tsunami who devastated the coastal communities of Indonesia, Thailandia, Sri Lanka and India, the Caritas Confederation "tried to turn the disaster into an opportunity to save the people hit by the tsunami to rebuild sounder communities stated Viénot -. Some progress has been made, but there’s still lots of work to be done with care and sensitivity through the local Caritas branches and with the aid of the Confederation. We will stay for a long time in the areas that were hit by the tsunami".
