XX WYD: AN "ECUMENICAL" FAMILY HOSTS YOUNG ITALIANS. FOR THE DAY THE LIBRARY SOCIAL COMMITMENT TRANSFORMED INTO A PARISH CENTRE

” “A family apparently just like so many others: father, mother and five children, if it was not for him being a catholic and she being a protestant, and they deciding to take active part in the twinnings which preceded the 20th World Youth Day. In fact, the family decided to host some Italians. Among these also Don Augusto Mascagna, of the diocese of Civita Castellana: "It is a lovely family – said the priest – three of their children are catholics, one is protestant and one married in the Registry Office. This kind of cohabitation seems strange to us, but they live it in a natural way and in a joyful way. For instance, yesterday evening we were talking about Padre Pio but the wife did not know him. So the husband commented: "Excuse her, she is protestant!". This attitude is an example of civil cohabitation among people of different religions". Today is the day dedicated to social commitment, and young Italians twinned with the German diocese of Bamberg cleaned up the former diocese library which had not been in use for a while to transform it into a parish centre. "It was a beautiful experience – said Father Mascagna – the youngsters fraternized with their German contemporaries and with some Hungarians, who were also ready to take part in the WYD". This evening there will be a meeting with the protestant community, with a liturgy and a procession from the protestant church to the catholic church.
