XX WYD: TODAY IS "WELFARE" DAY. 1 MILLION HOURS’ VOLUNTEER WORK WITH DISABLED PEOPLE, ELDERLY PEOPLE, CHILDREN

” “For the young who have come to the XX World Youth Day, today it is "Welfare" Day, also known as "Under construction – Join us to build a more equal world". As it happened in Toronto on August 12th 2002, even today young Germans and foreigners will spend 5 hours of their day in social initiatives, thus completing 1 million hours’ volunteer work in the dioceses in which twinships are under way. The phrase "Under construction" belongs to the Internet jargon and refers to online connections and world-wide relations among people. By mid-May, the "Underconstruction" databank already contained drafts projects from 22 dioceses, headed by Osnabrück with 111 projects. The schedule of events includes excursions, picnics and concerts with disabled and elderly people; football matches with refugees; gardening work in social facilities, craftwork and children drama workshops. Over the last few days, boys and girls got ready for the job through "social mapping", i.e. by studying the social and charitable facilities of their parish churches. All the people joining the social initiatives will bring to Colony a stone, symbolising the development of a "world of love and justice". All these stones will then be used to build a maze at "Haus Altenberg", near Cologne. 16,000 young disabled people from all over the world are also expected to come to the WYD – which has been awarded the European eco-sustainability certification.
