XX WYD: SOCIAL COMMITMENT DAY, CARDINAL LEHMANN: "EXPERIENCES THAT WILL LEAVE THEIR MARK"

” “The initiatives taken all over Germany by young Germans and their guests from all over the world "must raise awareness of the way the peoples of the earth are responsible towards each other and depend on each other in solidarity. It is a practise of mutual responsibility for the generations to come". These are the words of cardinal Karl Lehmann, president of the German Bishops Conference, as he announced the Social Commitment Day, which yesterday saw young Germans and foreigners – taking part in the XX WYD – engaged in social initiatives in the twinned dioceses. Such initiatives include: at Münster, the hosts, guests and the young patients of an oncological hospital have organised a music performance and a play for the young patients. At Erfurt, the parishioners and in particular the socially-neediest people have been invited for coffee and cakes at a table set up near the church. In the archdiocese of Hamburg, the youth have given their contribution to a plan for building houses for the refugees who claimed for asylum in Volksdorf. In the diocese of Würzburg, the fair trade shop has been restructured.
