XX WYD: SOUTH AFRICANS PRAY FOR PEOPLE SUFFERING FROM AIDS. ABSTINENCE AND FAITHFULNESS ACCEPTED BY YOUNG PEOPLE (2)

William Belelie, an eighteen year old student, young leader in a parish in the diocese of Shoorn confirmed this. He said: "I am guiding a group of young people between 13 and 18 years of age to whom we are submitting the proposals of the Church in this environment. We hold individual and group meetings twice a week to motivate them, especially with the support of faith. Many do not understand our choices, but we know that in this way we will live a better life". Miriam Prudence Davids, 30 years old, a teacher from Johannesburg, explained that "the task of the Church is difficult because you have to check with so many different cultures who do not think like us. For instance, traditional African customs allow polygamy and this facilitates the spreading of AIDS. However, we understood that we can manage by offering mutual support within the group". Miriam hopes the Pope will talk again about the problems of Africa also in Cologne. Cardinale Napier does not doubt about this: "Benedict XVI is a wonderful listener, and is one of those who listens in order to then answer young people and help them to meet their hopes".
