XX WYD: CATECHESIS. MGR. SIGALINI (ITALY), EVERY YOUNG DEVOTEE SHOULD GO ON A ONE MONTH’S MISSION

"Young people thirst for God but there is no one to help them quench it, they look for answers to their questions about meaning and they are forced to take life as it comes, they ask for peace and they are given painkillers: so, they go to clairvoyants or read the horoscopes to find certainties". In the Köln Arena in Cologne, this morning, 17,500 Italian pilgrims listened to the catechesis of mgr. Domenico Sigalini, bishop of Palestrina. Another 3,000 stayed out. "The boys and girls of Cologne, once back home, suggested the bishop, will have to take new roads: offering salons for the morning sentinels, meeting places for daily life, workshops of adoration for wisdom and protection from the idols of modern society". The young must be able "to be demanding with their teachers, priests, bishops, parents, and let themselves be led in their walk towards God by the comet, which is embodied by John Paul II, who lit the new star, Benedict XVI". Finally, a proposition: "Every young devotee must consider offering one month in a land of mission. Summer camps are necessary but no longer adequate: we have to go a little bit further, by showing others the true source of happiness, which is Jesus". Then, he also warned them not to turn their associations, groups and movements into idols to be "adored" and to "be aware of being the Church".
