XX WYD: AWAITING AND FESTAL ATMOSPHERE ON THE MARIENFELD ESPLANADE

The huge Marienfeld esplanade is rapidly filling up with young people awaiting the vigil with the Holy Father. Young people are gradually arriving having walked along a road for about an hour and a half. They are carrying on their shoulders rucksacks and sleeping-bags in view of the long night they they will have to spend here. Unfortunately the overcast sky does not foretell anything good, in spite of the fact that the young people continue to reassure themselves by saying: "No, it will not rain tonight". In the meantime, some volunteers are handing out raincoats at the entrance of the esplanade, and at the Info point are giving information to the pilgrims on how to reach their reserved places. The Italians can be spotted by the large blue cloth on which they are sitting awaiting the vigil. In the centre of the esplanade on a hillock ten metres high stands out the papal stage, whereas on the right on a smaller stage singers and music groups are beginning to follow. "We come from many countries in the world – said one of them – but what unites us is the universal language of music and love". Across the stage is written: "Building one world". There is an impressive deployment of mass media communications. Telecameras and TV presenters are already ready to shoot the event on the structures reserved for the media.
