The youth of the WYD knock at the doors of the New York Glass Building. Among the many initiatives that have taken place in Cologne, the forum on "Justice and Peace" has produced a document that offers the points of view and the suggestions of the Catholic youth on the great themes currently being debated at the international level. The text will be forwarded to the Assembly Meeting of the United Nations scheduled for September next. "It is our intention reads the 12-page document to pool together the experiences of our countries and nations of origin to develop visions for a world of peace and justice, in collaboration with the representatives of the churches and of the political world". "We are committed the WYD youth promise to a world in which all men, and especially children and adolescents, can enjoy their rights, and have access to the wealth and opportunities they need so as to live and take an active part in the building of a society that is worth living in". After recalling the "Millennium Goals" set by the U.N. in 2000 (fight against poverty and disease, access to drinking water for all, access to education, protection of the environment), the youth pin-point three pre-conditions that need to be achieved: "respect for human rights"; "cutting the debts of the poorer countries"; "commitment of all the governments of the world to bring about lasting development". And finally, five priority themes which are analysed in depth by the youth who also offer practical indications and which, according to the text, require the active commitment of the international community: the right to food; the right to health; the right to education and to a job; the conservation of Creation; building a world of peace.
