This morning at Marienfeld everyone was looking forward to the official announcement of the venue for the World Youth Day of 2008, but the Pope had broken the news the previous day. The "news leak" was revealed by the August 20 issue of "Direkt", the journal of the WYD being distributed in the last few days in Cologne. The news item appears in the upper right hand corner under the title in English: "The winner is Sidney" which reads: "During lunch yesterday (Friday 19 August, editor’s note) with some young people, with a slip of the tongue, the Pope inadvertently said that Sydney was going to be the venue of the WYD 2008". As everyone knows, the Pope had intended to announce the decision in favour of Sydney today, as he then actually did.
