THE POPE AT ANGELUS: CHRISTIANS’ UNITY WEEK, "DESPITE DIFFICULTIES AND ORDEALS, ECUMENISM ADVANCES"

The ecumenical movement, "thanks God, advances all over the world. There are difficulties and ordeals, of course, but these too have some spiritual use as they drive us to be patient and perseverant and to grow in brotherly love". It is a message full of hope for the ecumenical cause, the one that Pope Benedict XVI gave yesterday, before the Angelus prayer as he recalled that January 18th to 25th is the "Week of Prayer for the Unity of Christians". "We do not know – said the Pope – how or when, because it is not for us to know, but we must not doubt that one day we will be "one", just like Jesus and the Father are one in the Holy Ghost". Then, Benedict XVI closed his brief speech by recalling again that his first Encyclical named "God is love" will be published next Wednesday, January 25th. "I am glad – he said – that it coincides with the end of the Week of Prayer for the Unity of Christians; on that day, I will go to the Basilica of Saint Paul’s for the Vespers which will also be attended by delegates from the other churches and church communities".
