EUROPE: ISTITUTO AFFARI INTERNAZIONALI, "SUPPORTING THE FOREFRONT" AND "JOIN FORCES WITH THOSE WHO WANT THE EU TO MAKE PROGRESS"

The first suggestion put forward by the document on the future of the EU, presented today at the headquarters of Istituto affari internazionali in Rome during a meeting for the 40th anniversary of the Iai, concerns participation in the euro. "It is not just – state the compilers – about stopping complaining of having joined the euro". "Above all, we need to raise awareness of the basic choices that economy and economic policy must make, for Italy to adapt its development model to competition in the single market and to global economy". The text, which contains 15 cues for meditation, each one applicable to one EU member country, all about economics, encourages the reader to: "adhere to balance discipline", "complete the single market", "develop the EU budget", "make the Euro-group grow". In terms of international projection, the authors (Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa, Ettore Greco and Stefano Silvestri) insist on the need to "promote multilateralism", to re-balance the EU after the extension (the EU "leans to the north and east"), to "increase security in the areas around the EU". In the institutional domain, the document lingers on the urgent need to "promote the ratification of the Constitutional Treaty", to "strengthen European democracy" (also by enhancing the role of the Strasbourg Parliament), to "support the forefront" and "join forces with those who want Europe to make progress".
