EUROPE: THE RECIPE OF ISTITUTO AFFARI INTERNAZIONALI FOR THE FUTURE OF THE EU

"Fifteen cornerstones of EU policy": the Rome-based Istituto affari internazionali published a document containing guidelines for a national policy aimed at promoting continental integration, consisting of three major sections: "economic and social affairs", "international projection and security", "institutional reforms". The document (submitted to the meeting – held on January 23rd and 24th – on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the foundation of Iai) aims to "push the Italian debate about Europe beyond that feigned unanimity that has often been the distinctive sign of the pro-European choices of our country". The text was compiled by three authors: Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa, Ettore Greco and Stefano Silvestri. "In the first part – explain the authors – the document highlights how, despite the important accomplishments of the last few years (euro, extension, Constitutional Treaty, actions in the Balkans and growing role in the Middle East and Iran), Europe is going through a time of stagnation and want of confidence, which, also because of the long economic recession, can turn into a serious crisis. This difficult situation can have a very bad impact on Italy. But at the same time it can – as it has done before – give a relevant contribution to impart new dynamism to the EU".
