THE EU CONSTITUTION: CARD. SCHÖNBORN, "CHRISTIAN ROOTS ARE A DECISIVE ISSUE"

"The debate about the EU Constitution making reference to the Christian roots and the issue of the reference to God are not just trifles of the Pope or some stragglers who have slept all through the Enlightenment: it is instead a decisive issue". This was stated by card. Christoph Schönborn, president of the Austrian Bishops Conference yesterday in Frankfurt. The archbishop of Vienna referred to the principle according to which modern democracy thrives on conditions it cannot give itself. "At the end of the day – he added – it thrives on the reference to God, the ultimate guarantor of the person, its freedom, its unconditional dignity and its inalienable responsibility". Schönborn was in Frankfurt for the traditional feast which once a year celebrates Charles the Great, considered "the father of the West".
