BENEDICT XVI: TALKING TO THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS. HUMANITARIAN EMERGENCIES, "NO STATE SHOULD SHIRK ITS RESPONSIBILITIES"

Hunger, poverty, forced migration. The speech that this morning Pope Benedict XVI gave to the Diplomatic Corpos accredited to the Holy See was closed by a comment about the "immense army of the poor" who, "even if not at war" "are the unarmed victims". The Pope said: "What springs to mind is the upsetting images of the large refugee camps" and "all those people who disgraceful living conditions lead to migrate, far from their country and their families, hoping in a more humane life. Nor can we forget the plague of the trafficking of people, which still brings shame on our age". "Before such "humanitarian emergencies" – continued the Pope – as well as other dramatic problems of men, many people of good will, several international bodies and non-governmental organisations have not stood by. But we need more joint efforts by the Diplomacies to find in truth and to overcome with courage and generosity the obstacles that still block the road to effective solutions, that are worthy of man. And truth requires that none of the thriving states shirk its responsibilities and the duty to help by drawing more generously from their own resources".
