THE HOLY SEE. MSGR. MIGLIORE: CREATING "A NEW POLITICAL CULTURE" IN FAVOUR OF AFRICA’S DEVELOPMENT

” “"Creating new kinds of solidarity, on the bilateral and multilateral level, through a more decisive commitment by everybody", starting from the "firm belief that the African peoples’ wellness is a necessary condition for achieving common good". It is the invitation addressed by Msgr. Celestino Migliore, permanent Observer of the Holy See at the United Nations, during the plenary session of the 61st United Nations General Meeting, taking place in New York yesterday. In particular, the Vatican exponent asked for "a new policy in the international cooperation areas", which should overcome "slowness" in fulfilling the commitments taken on through the Millennium Development Goals and "the foreign debt question, which is still partially open". "Today, more than ever before, – added Msgr. Migliore, – a fundamental condition to bring peace to the world is awareness of the interdependence between wealthy and poor countries. Development must be understood as a common task for everyone; otherwise, a regression process might start even in the areas which have been characterized by economic improvement and social advancement, up to now". Among the obligations of international solidarity, the Holy See exponent also pointed out "the importance of protecting the natural environment as means for "the creation and the protection of the earth’s richness for future generations".” “
