These are the words of Benedict XVI in today’s message to Jacques Diouf, general manager of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (Fao), on the occasion of the World Food Day 2006 that took place on October 16th. As he recalled the subject of the Day (Investing in agriculture for secure food), the Pope encouraged not to consider just the "technical and socio-economical aspects" of the matter, but to place man at the heart of it, "as the protagonist", and give prominence to "the rural world", the principles and values of which “concern the individual behaviour, the relations between husband and wife and between generations, and solidarity within the family”. Hence the need of "investments that will enable" these types of families to "play their role and serve their function, avoiding the harmful consequences of hedonism and materialism that can endanger marital and family relations”.
