EUROPE: THE HUNGARIAN REVOLT OF 1956 COMMEMORATED IN STRASBOURG

” “With a solemn commemoration and a statement, the EU Parliament celebrates today the fiftieth anniversary of the Hungarian revolution "against the communist regime", afterwards "stifled by the Soviet troops". Tomorrow, instead, the Strasbourg Parliament will be waiting for the Hungarian president László Sólyom, who will give a speech to the Assembly. From Strasbourg comes a statement from Terry Davis, secretary general of the Council of Europe: "1956 – he states – announced the fall of a Wall that had not been built yet. On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of this grand historical event, the only word I can say to my Hungarian friends is a simple, sincere thank you". According to Davis, "for about half a century, historians have made several assumptions to account for the failure of the Hungarian revolution but all of them have lost sight of the core of the matter: it was not a failure. Of course, it bore its fruit too late for the thousands of Hungarians who lost their lives in the revolt, but their sacrifice was helpful to ensure freedom to their children and the other oppressed Europeans in a ideologically-split Europe". ” “
