EUROPE: SECURITY AND JUSTICE WITHIN THE EU, MEETING IN BRUSSELS OF THE MEPs OF THE 25 EU MEMBER STATES

” “The integrated management of the boundaries of the European Union, the balance between the integration of legal immigrants and the fight against illegal immigration, the fight against terrorism, data protection and exchange, the future of Europol. These are just a few of the subjects that have resounded on the floor of the European Parliament in Brussels on the occasion of the meeting called "From Tampere to The Hague", i.e. the creation of a space of freedom and security in Europe. The end of the meeting has been entrusted today afternoon to commissioner Franco Frattini. The initiative, promoted by the EU Parliament and the Finnish Parliament, brought together for two days the delegates of the Parliamentary assemblies of the 25 member states and the future EU member states, the delegates of the Commission and Council, those of Europol and other EU agencies. The discussion has been brought about by the need, which came to the fore at the meeting of Tampere (Finland) in 1999, of creating "an European area about freedom, security and justice". The initial goal has now taken on the traits of the The Hague Program, which also sets out "to establish a migration policy for the 25 member states" as well as to create "a shared action to fight the threat of international terrorism" which has become most apparent after September 11th 2001.” “
