BENEDICT XVI: "RECOGNISING THE LEGAL STATUS OF THE GREEK CHURCH"

” “"The Catholic Church is not looking for any privilege, it is only asking to see its identity and its mission recognised, so that it can effectively give its contribution to the integral wellbeing of the noble Greek population, of which you are an integral part". This was said by Benedict XVI this morning, as he received, on their visit ad limina, the bishops of the Greek Bishops Conference that, during their talks with the Pontiff, had expressed "the wish to see the government establish their right to have an appropriate and recognised legal status". "The Holy See – stated the Pope – is very careful because it really wants these problems to be effectively solved, based not just on the applicable local regulations and the European directives, but also on international law and the well-established practice of friendly and fruitful bilateral relations". "As well as talks – he noted – perseverance is necessary here. With patience and respect for lawful proceedings – concluded Benedict XVI – the longed-for agreement will be reached through everybody’s efforts".” “
