EUROPE: A REPORT ON THE JUDICIARIES IN 45 STATES

” “"At the bottom of this surveying tool is the will to monitor the operation of the judiciaries in the European countries", which are a "guarantee of an effective democracy and the protection of the Constitutional state". Guy De Vell, general manager of the Juridical Affairs Service of the Council of Europe, comments the "Report on the assessment of the European judiciaries", launched yesterday by Cepej (Commission européenne pour l’efficacité de la justice), a body promoted by the Strasbourg-based International organisation. The report "reviews the facilities, the means, the budgets, the staff" used in 45 States of the old continent in the sphere of justice, as well as "the methods and length of trials"; then, it also suggests "a number of possible corrective measures, partly in the light of the juridical instruments promoted by the Council of Europe". "The collection and analysis of these information – reads the introduction to the report – should allow the decision-makers and the judicial community to understand the main trends of the judiciary, locate problems and help implement reforms to make justice more effective".
