PLENARY MEETING OF CCEE: THE BISHOPS’ FINAL STATEMENT (2)

” “In their statement, the Bishops also recall "the tragic fate of the Iraqi people; for centuries Muslims and Christians have lived together in peace, but the violence between religious groups of the last few months is tearing apart the Muslim community and making the survival of the Christian community nearly impossible. At the same time, exceedingly cruel episodes of violence have occurred again in the Palestinian Territories, where internecine divisions seem to be the most serious ordeal this people has had to face so far". Before all these scenarios, "the members of Cccee wish the faithful may work to give all the help they can. An important task is also to collect information on the countries – including the nearest ones – where the right to religious freedom is often trampled on and on all those regions in which diseases and hunger cut short the lives of so many children of God, to keep the problem alive in public opinion and with the authorities". Finally, the European Bishops "insist on a serious resumption of the “Millennium Goals”, which set out to eradicate by 2015 poverty, hunger, infant mortality, diseases and support education, equality, environmental sustainability. It was launched on the Jubilee of 2000, but it is too often disregarded”.” “
