EUROPE: "EMPOWER" (SOCIAL FORUM ON COMMUNICATION), THE INTERNET AND THE WEB 2.0, MORE POWER TO CITIZENS? (2)

” “The group on "the age of the Internet" spoke of the new way of communicating through the web, the so-called Web 2.0, which enables Internet users to be directly involved, by joining a community in which they share values, materials or knowledge: an example of this are the "Youtube" websites (containing 65,000 amateur videos) or "Wikipedia", the free encyclopaedia in many different languages which turned out to be one of the most visited websites in Europe, with 1 and a half million user-changeable items. As well as some less known websites, such as that of the European youth known as "Cafè Babel" in 7 languages, which does not use the web 2.0 but publishes hundreds of free articles; or the French website "Agoravox", where anyone can write. All these initiatives however also show some "minor flaws", such as the risk of incorrect information or manipulations. Will the new communication methods replace the traditional media? According to the participants in the meeting, "traditional media will keep existing because in this excessive communication, which is quite different from information, people will need more and more reference points that may act as catalysts for the collective conscience".” “
