BENEDICT XVI: MESSAGE FOR THE MIGRATION DAY, "REINSTATING THE CULTURE OF RESPECT"

” “Refugees and foreign students too are the focus of Benedict XVI’s message, announced today, for the World Migrant and Refugee Day (January 14th 2007) about "The migrant family”. “I feel duty-bound to draw attention to the families of the refugees, whose conditions have grown worse than in the past”, writes the Pontiff, highlighting their "logistic problems", the traumas suffered by them and sometimes "the risk of involving women and children in sexual exploitation". According to the Pope, "a careful pastoral presence is a must" to "effectively reinstate the culture of respect and bring back to light the true value of love". Refugees instead "must be asked to cultivate an open and proactive attitude to the society that receives them”. “Helping foreign students – added Benedict XVI – is also an important sphere of pastoral action". Hence the commitment of the Church to help these young people who are "away from home", often "without an adequate knowledge of the language" and insufficient means, “to fit into the cities that receive them”.” “
