CINEMA: THE "TERTIO MILLENNIO" FESTIVAL; MGR. FOLEY, “THE MEMORY OF FORGOTTEN REALITIES” AND “THE CRY OF HUMANKIND”

“The dramatic experience of the denied word and the stifled cry runs throughout the history of humankind”, but “the dignity of man must not be stifled"; this is why "cinema, a medium, an instrument of culture and deep knowledge, can be first and foremost the medium which can be entrusted with the historical memory of all" "the forgotten realities". This is the focal point of the reflection of mgr. John P. Foley, president of the Papal College of Social Communication, who spoke this morning at the international meeting named "The conspiracy of silence”, promoted by the Papal Gregorian University for the tenth Tertio Millennio Spiritual Film Festival. The meeting is organised by the Papal Council for Culture, along with mgr. Foley’s Department and the Vatican Show Board and Film Library. A silence that, according to mgr. Foley, “can be broken to make the cry of humankind be heard, to give voice to the weak and the unfortunate ones who have lost all hope”. Through cinema, with its "universal language that knows how to get to people’s heart", the young "can learn how dangerous hatred is, how unacceptable racism is, how destructive religious intolerance is”.
