EUROPE: PARLIAMENT ASKS FOR AN INTERNATIONAL PEACE CONFERENCE ON THE MIDDLE EAST

” “"There is no military solution to the conflict between Israel and Palestine": the EU Parliament took position, during this morning’s plenary session in Strasbourg, on the situation of the Middle East, through a document approved by the widest majority. In deploring the recent bombing of Beit Hanun, the Assembly confirmed that a State – in this case, Israel – is entitled to defend itself, although this "cannot justify a disproportionate or indiscriminate use of force". The attacks against civilians "are a blatant breach of the fundamental rights" sanctioned by international law. The EU Parliament urges the Israeli Government "to put an end to the building of the colonies and the separation wall in the Palestinian Territories". At the same time, the MEPs exhort the Palestinian armies "to stop throwing rockets onto the Israeli territory" and condemn the attack of Sderot that caused the death of some Israeli civilians. Parliament aims "at deploying an international taskforce in Gaza and Cis-Jordan" and "strengthening humanitarian aids to Palestine". In addition, it wants to convene "a peace conference" and re-launch the roadmap. The Gaza issue will be tackled by the European Council, planned for 14th and 15th December in Brussels.” “
