COMECE: PLENARY MEETING FROM TOMORROW IN BRUSSELS. THE CONGRESS FOR THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ROME TREATIES AS THE FOCUS

The Congress that, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Rome Treaties (25 March 1957), Comece (Commission of the EU Bishops Conferences) promotes in the Italian capital from 23rd to 25th March 2007, will be the focus of the work of the plenary meeting of the European Bishops that opens tomorrow in Brussels (until 24th November). “The members of Comece – reads a note published today – will reflect on the context in which the Rome Treaties have been developed”, the role of those who negotiated them and "the meaning of the Treaties in the politic integration of the European Union". The Bishops will also discuss a contribution plan in the run-up to the Berlin Declaration on the values of the Union that will be submitted by the German presidency in March 2007. Other topics include the challenges for today’s EU: energy policy, migration, research and bioethics, intercultural dialogue. One of the speakers will be Philippe de Schoutheete, member of the expert committee established by Comece in order to draw up a report in the run-up to the Rome meeting. A press conference will be held in the evening of Wednesday 24th. Info: www.comece.org.
