ECUMENISM: ROWAN WILLIAMS, "THE THREE GOALS OF THE VISIT IN ROME HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED"

"I have come to Rome to establish a personal relationship with the Pope, develop dialogue between Anglicans and Catholics" and "meet the Vatican congregations and the ministries" in charge of ecumenical dialogue. "I can say all three goals have been achieved". After the meeting in the Vatican with Benedict XVI, the Primate of the Anglican Church Rowan Williams outlines a positive balance for his visit in Rome that will end on November 26th. At a press conference held this morning, attended also by card. Walter Kasper, president of the Papal Council for the Promotion of the Unity of Christians, and card. Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, the Catholic Primate of England and Wales, Williams announced that the report of the International Anglican-Catholic Commission for Unity and Mission (Iarcuum) will be published in early 2007, and "a workgroup will meet during the year to explore methods" for "a factual cooperation in testimony and service". As to the "obstacles" to dialogue, "we are going through a deep theological reflection" on the subject of the ordination of women bishops, he said. As to the "Eucharistic sharing, a request that comes above all from the root levels", Williams stated that "no shortcuts are possible". It is a goal for which "we must keep praying together".
