During the meeting of Comece, several topics were addressed: migration, the EU research policy and the bioethical issues it implies, the future extension, the energy policy, intercultural dialogue. The president, mgr. van Luyn, explains that "from 23rd to 25th March 2007, along with the Berlin event, Comece will promote a big meeting in Rome on the roots and the future of Europe, which will be attended by 450 guests from all over the continent. The meeting will have a cultural character" and "an ecumenical scope". In the text approved by the plenary meeting of the bishops, "peace is considered a cornerstone in the building of Europe and its main aim specifies van Luyn to SIR -. It is a Europe of peace, the one the founders of the EEC had in mind just after the war" and it retains its "powerful message today", both within the continent and on the international scene. As to Turkey, the president of Comece states: "Just before the Pope’s journey to that country, we would like to mention that the EU is not based on religions. It is, in a broader sense, a political community based on values", including the values proposed by the religious faiths. "Every country which would like to join the European Union, including Turkey, must identify itself with such principles".
