FRANCE: SOCIAL WEEKS, 12 PROPOSALS FOR A "FAIRER" SOCIETY

Twelve proposals for a "fairer" French society, ranging from educational backup to disadvantaged children to the protection of the homeless, labourers, immigrants: they have been put forward at the 81st Social Weeks of French Catholics, held in Paris-La Defénse from 24th to 26th November. The proposals, developed just before the French presidential elections of 2007, "will be a useful tool to reopen the debate on justice, and a way to make ourselves heard, as both citizens and Christians", explained yesterday, during the conclusions, Michel Camdessus, president of the Social Weeks of France, who also highlighted the importance of the local and European dimensions. A website is available from today: www.unesocieteplusjuste.org where the French can ask questions and continue the public awareness-raising campaign on the twelve proposals, which are: ensuring "normal education" to disadvantaged children, partly through experimental backup courses; a request for a "true labourer’s charter" and the reform of the corporate charter "to guarantee labour takes priority over capital"; "stopping the scandal of the ghettoes and the homeless"; “treating convicts with respect”; strengthening "social cohesion" through a "compulsory civil service”; (to be continued)
