THE POPE IN TURKEY: REPORTS AND COMMENTS IN ALL EUROPE’S NEWSPAPERS AND TVS

"Ecumenical dialogue between Catholics and members of the Orthodox Church, will be the main objective of the Pope’s visit". "El Mundo" emphasizes this aspect of the journey of Benedict XVI to Turkey. Like the Spanish daily, almost all the European newspapers (and the corresponding websites) are dedicating room and comments to the visit which started today. Among the subjects taken into consideration by "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung", "Le Monde", "The Times" "Tagesspiegel" and "Libération", the decision of the prime minister of Turkey, Tayyp Erdogan, was outstanding. He actually decided to meet the Pope at the airport of the capital. Then newspapers and TVs emphasized the problems linked with the safety of the different stages (Ankara, Ephesus and Istanbul); the "expectations linked with the relationship between the Orient and the West"; the future of the negotiations for the entry of the country into the European Union, which sometimes is compared with the results of the religious event. In the last few days, "Euronews" dedicated several reports to the journey. Euronews is a television station broadcasting in six languages, and depending on both the European Union and a group of national televisions. Today, the event is followed live through all the news broadcast by that TV. "Gathering all the Christians in the world under just one Church": that would be the intention conceived by Benedict XVI through this mission, according to "Euronews", which also emphasises the Pope’s intention "to build a bridge between Christianity and Islam".
