EUROPE: COMECE; JUSTICE, HUMAN DIGNITY AND SOLIDARITY, THE "EUROPEAN VALUES" OF THE YOUNG

” “Justice, respect for human dignity and solidarity: these are the main ethical values the young deem "essential for the building of Europe". In the last few days, at the end of the second meeting of the Expert Committee appointed by Comece (Commission of the Bishops Conferences of the European Community) in order to draw up a report on the ethical foundations of the European Union in the run-up to the Congress of Rome (23-25 March 2007), nine boys and girls aged 25 to 30 (from Romania, Germany, Croatia, Italy, Slovakia, France, Poland and the United Kingdom) were asked to tell which ethical values they deem essential for pursuing the building of Europe. "The ones that were most often mentioned – reads a note published today – include justice, respect for human dignity and solidarity”. But the young also highlighted "their attachment to the notion of accountability – the accountability of the EU member states towards one another, the accountability of Europe towards the world, the civic accountability of the Europeans”. The members of the Expert Committee (25 Catholic representatives from different EU countries), concludes the note, "will keep in mind the suggestions of these young Europeans to enrich their relations”.” “
