"For the fatigue of studying and teaching to make sense in relation to the Kingdom of God, it must be supported by the theological virtues. The immediate object of theological science, in its different specifications, is God Himself, revealed in Jesus Christ": it was said this morning in Rome, in the premises of the Gregorian University, by Pope Benedict XVI in the introduction to his speech, during his visit to the University founded in 1551 by Ignatius Loyola. After mentioning that the "Gregorian" university "since its origins has stood out for the study of philosophy and theology", Benedict XVI added that "nowadays, one cannot help facing the confrontation with secular culture, that in many parts of the world is increasingly tending, not only to deny every sign of the presence of God in the life of society and individuals, but, in different ways that bewilder and numb man’s right conscience, is trying to erode man’s ability to tune in to God".
