"The issue of the defence of life from conception to natural death is nowadays the postulate of reason and fair conscience, regardless of one’s creed, while faith strengthens the respect of the natural laws that are engraved in the heart of every human being". This was written by the president of the Polish Bishops Conference, the metropolitan archbishop of Przemysl, Jozef Michalik, in a letter sent yesterday to the president of the Polish Chamber, Marek Jurek, on the occasion of the recent opening of the Parliamentary debate about the amendments to be made to the Constitution of the Republic of Poland for adding the principle of the "defence of life from conception to natural death". According to the president of the Polish Bishops, nowadays "not only Europe is about to commit demographic suicide, but the humanity of each one of us is at a deadly risk every time we fail to give appropriate answers to the laws that authorise one to kill an innocent being or when we try to convince ourselves that such killing might be ‘justified’". "The issue of the defence of life is one the foundations of ethics, it goes beyond the political arena and the interests of the individual parties", concludes the archbishop.
