EUROPE: EMPOWER (SOCIAL FORUM ON COMMUNICATION), “EUROPEAN IDENTITY GROWING BUT NO PUBLIC SPACE”

The demographer Lutz, in explaining the results of a survey published on a scientific journal a few weeks ago, presented the statistics of the “sense of identity" felt by the citizens: top of the list of the countries that recognise themselves in a "multiple" identity are Luxembourg (78 per cent) and Italy (72 per cent), while bottom of the list are Finland and the United Kingdom (42 per cent). Obviously, young people feel this identity more (it only affects one third of elderly people), so in future this will lead to "a promising growth in the European identity that will have an impact on the future integration process”. The meeting continues in the afternoon through four parallel groups about such subjects as civics, communication between citizens and institutions, the age of the Internet. The ensuing proposals will be submitted tomorrow to Margot Wallstrom, deputy president of the European Commission, who will draw her conclusions. Parallel events include a meeting of cartoonists who will draw the European integration process from their points of view.” “
