EUROPE: VAN DER LINDEN (CoE), "FIGHTING AIDS WITH MEDICAL SOLUTIONS AND BY STOPPING PREJUDICE"

” “"The world committed itself to stop AIDS by 2015, but the disease is still spreading in very many countries". In a statement made on the occasion of the World Day against Aids, which is held today, René van der Linden, president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, explains: "Fighting Hiv/Aids does not mean just finding medical solutions but also stopping prejudice. Too many people regard Aids as other people’s disease, as a foreigners’ disease, thus causing discrimination". This attitude "must change, not only because it is unfair for those who suffer, but also because it undermines the effectiveness of our response". The CoE Assembly is going to discuss, next January, some reports on the disease: "As MEPs – adds Van der Linden -, we will outline the way to go, in order to stop prejudice, help the victims and keep the promise of stopping the disease in ten years’ time. I hope the European politicians will listen to us". ” “
