THE POPE IN TURKEY: MASS IN ISTANBUL; "THE ECUMENICAL PERSPECTIVE AT THE TOP"” “” “

” “Only "by placing the ecumenical prospective at the top of our ecclesial worries will we really live according to the Spirit of Jesus, at the service of everybody’s good". The appeal made in the Church of Saint George at Phanar, on November 30th 1979, by John Paul II was renewed today by Benedict XVI, at Mass to mark the end of his journey in Turkey, celebrated in the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Istanbul. "Twenty-seven years ago, in this very cathedral, my predecessor, the Servant of God John Paul II, made the wish that the dawn of the new millennium might ‘rise on a Church that has found its full unity again, to be a better witness, amidst the embittered tensions of the world, of the transcending love of God, revealed in His Son Jesus Christ’", recalled the Holy Father. "This wish – he specified – has not been granted yet, but the Pope’s wish is still the same and drives us, all of us, the disciples of Christ who move on with our delays and our poverties on the path that leads to unity, to work ceaselessly with a view to everybody’s good, by placing the ecumenical perspective at the top of our ecclesial worries". ” “
