EUROPE: EU PARLIAMENT IN STRASBOURG, REACH DIRECTIVE, SACHAROV AWARD AND FUTURE ACCESSION TO THE EU

The Chemicals Directive (Reach); the legislation named "TV without frontiers"; the protection of children from audiovisual productions and websites; the debate on future accession. These are some of the items on the agenda of the plenary session of the EU Parliament, to be held from today to Thursday, in Strasbourg. It is the first highlight of this intensive EU week, which is going to end with the summit of the heads of state and government of the 25 EU member states (14-15 December). Today, the floor is going to address the Reach Directive, while tomorrow a solemn session will be devoted to giving the Sacharov award to Alexander Milinkevich, leader of the Belarus opposition. The MEPs will then appoint the Bulgarian and Romanian members of Barroso’s executive committee who will take office on 1st January, when the two states will join the EU. The Bulgarian Meglena Kuneva will be in charge of consumer protection, while the Rumanian Leonard Orban will take care of multilingualism. Wednesday a debate will be held in preparation to the Brussels summit. "The main dishes on the menu of the meeting – says a note from Parliament – are the accession of Bulgaria and Romania and the future extension of the EU to Turkey and Croatia", "the migration policy and the future of the European Constitution".
