BENEDICT XVI: THE COMMON DECLARATION (2)

” “In the second part of the Declaration, Benedict XVI and Christodoulos pay tribute "to the impressive progress made by science" and invite "the persons in charge to respect the sacred character and the dignity of the human being", adding they are "worried at seeing that science practises tests on human beings that do not respect the dignity and integrity of the human being in all the steps of its life". The Declaration pays special attention to Europe, which is asked to give "proof of sensitivity in protecting more effectively the fundamental rights of man. We wish – reads the text – a fruitful cooperation may be started in order to make our contemporaries rediscover the Christian roots of Europe that have shaped the different nations". Extending their glance to the worldwide scenario, the two religious leaders "invite the wealthier countries to take more care of the poorer ones" and do not fail to make reference "to the unlawful exploitation of the Creation". Based on such "common beliefs", Benedict XVI and Christodoulos reassert "the wish to join forces for the development of society in a constructive cooperation at the service of peoples and man".” “
